Chronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team have finally released an untethered software jailbreak for all Apple devices running the A4 chip and below. Unfortunately the two current A5 devices, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, are not currently compatible with this release at this time but the jailbreak will work on the iPhone 4 and 3Gs, iPod Touch 3G and 4G and the original iPad.
The jailbreak is the result of months of work by an individual called pod2g, who is currently turning his efforts towards A5 devices. Pod2g’s work was passed on to both the Chronic and iPhone Dev Teams who then integrated the payload into their existing tools.
The jailbreak is available both as a Cydia package (search: “Corona”) for those already running a tethered jailbreak, or as a redsn0w and Pwnage Tool package which can be used to jailbreak a device from a Windows or Mac OS X computer. Users should update their devices to iOS 5.0.1 before
attempting the jailbreak, and unlockers interested in preserving basebands should avoid stock, Apple-signed updates and use a custom IPSW.
The jailbreak has already been updated once since release to version 0.9.10b2 with bug fixes. Users looking for more information about the current jailbreak, preserving basebands and custom software updates should check out iClarified.
